A Luminous Video Artist and More Bright Freedom

I got another writing exercise done this week and took another stab at my story “Bright Freedom.”

The Rival of the Luminous Video Artist

I did my writing exercise based on the title "The Rival of the Luminous Video Artist" this week. I got it recorded and posted.

At a gallery, a video artist looks at new works by a man he considers his main rival.

Bright Freedom

I have worked on my story, "Bright Freedom", off and on since at least the beginning of 2011. There are some problems with the story, but the main issue that keeps stopping me is that it features a protagonist that is quite different from myself.

She is a woman, and I've never been a woman. She is a lawyer and I've never been a lawyer. She is an immigrant to Canada, while I was born here. She is a person of color, which I've never been.

My original idea was for a mystery/thriller story. However, it involves corporate malfeasance, domestic abuse and honor killing as elements of the plot. I worry that if I don't handle it properly, it could get me in a heap of trouble.

I want to find people who identify with the main character to get their views before I try to finish the project. I came across the concept of sensitivity readers a while back, and that is what I will be looking for.

I have tackled the immigrant experience in a story before. See “A Walk in the Snow” https://dynamiclethargyfilms.ca/stories/a-walk-in-the-snow/ In that case I talked to a man I knew who had a similar background to my character about my idea before I wrote it. After I wrote it, I asked him to read it before I published it. after I wrote. He liked the story and encouraged me to post it.

Before I approach anyone about doing the sensitivity review, I felt I needed a good treatment or outline of the story. I’ve struggled with that for a while, but I managed to get a draft done this week. It is about 2,600 words. I’ve asked my writer’s group for feed back.

Video about a Senator and an Audio about a Soil Scientist

I finished and posted "The Desperation of the Wretched Senator" last week. This week I posted audio of my writing exercise: "A Journal for a Silly Social Scientist".

"The Desperation of the Wretched Senator"

A politician tries to keep his past deeds from coming back to haunt him.

I have been more lethargic than dynamic the last few weeks. I let this video sit idle for weeks. I finally got back to work on it last week. I made a few changes and got it posted.

I lollygagged on my most recent writing exercise too. But I got it done this week. I wasn't too inspired by the title, but I felt the end result wasn't too bad.

Stalled Projects

I have several projects that I have let lie over the past few weeks. I have pretty much all I need to make videos of “The Sad Lady and the Hesitant Father-in-law”, “The Dread of the Daring Rocketeer”, and “Time Enough for the Anxious Social Media Manager”. I just need to get myself back on track.

Animation Programs

After a period of procrastination, I planned to try out Unreal Engine 5 this week. Unfortunately, it turns out that it won’t run on my computer. My graphics card is too old. I think the rest of the system may be OK though. I think that if I want to run it, I'd be better off to get a new computer rather than trying to upgrade my old one. I'm not keen to do that just yet.

As a result, I decided to have another look at what I can do with Blender for animation. People have used it to do a lot of the same things as Unreal Engine. I just haven’t figured out how to do them.

I also found out about another program, iClone. I think I'll take a look at. Unlike Unreal Engine and Blender, you do have to pay for it, but it doesn’t cost very much.

None of these other programs seem as easy to use as NAWMAL.
