Martian Trip Video Posted

I posted a new video this week about my trip to Mars. I didn't actually go to Mars to make it. The video began as a short story I wrote for a class I took on conversational Mandarin, so the narration is in Mandarin. There are English subtitles though.
My new trip to Mars video is now posted at:
After my wife died last year, her brother took her remains back to China for burial. My wife and I agreed to that before she died. My brother-in-law invited me to visit to see her grave. I didn't speak any Mandarin and was worried about travelling there on my own. I decided to take a class to learn some of the language.
We had to write, and present, a short story in Mandarin. It was supposed to be only five sentences long. Mine ended up as six, but no one complained.
I'm still not very confident about my pronunciation, and I have trouble remembering words. After I recorded the audio, I asked some Mandarin speaking friends review it. I had to rerecord part of it.
I used some images of the Earth and Mars from the NASA website. They are in the public domain. I only needed one image of the Earth. I used several images of the Martian surface. To make them more visually interesting, I did either a pan or a zoom to give some motion. I had created a star-scape for another project, and I used that as the background for the full planet images.
In my original version, I used an image from the movie "The Martian". The image was exactly what I wanted, but since it wasn't public domain, I decided I needed something else. I tried several approaches before I found something I liked. Like the other images, I have an image of the Martian surface pan across the screen. I added a video of an eye blinking, so as to appear as if an astronaut was looking through a visor.
I wanted to add some background sound to the narration. NASA created audio files of the sounds that different planets and the Sun make. I think they convert the radio waves they produce to make the sound. I used sounds for the Earth, The Sun, and Mars.

I did sneak in a bit of an Easter egg. Only one person has mentioned it so far.

Interstellar and Martian Trips

It has been a while since I last posted. I've had a difficult time getting active on any of my movie projects. In the last few weeks I have started work on a couple of small projects that should result in something to post soon.
I've had a large number of people sign up for my mailing list while I was inactive. I have no idea why.
Red Star Planet Flyby
The Breakthrough Starshot project caught my interest when I first learned of it. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakthrough_Starshot). It is a proposal to send a probe to the Alpha Centauri star system. I would like to see what they find.
Unfortunately for me, they think it will be 20 years to develop the technology, 20 to 30 years to travel to the star and then 4 or 5 years to send back the data. I don't need to reveal my age for people to realize that I won't likely be around to see the result.
So, what I have started to work on is a simulated flyby through an alien star system. Then, at least, I'd get some idea what they might see.
I've used Blender to create the simulated star system. I haven't given it a name yet. It is not based on any real star. I gave it 4 planets, 3 super Earths and a smaller planet. The furthest planet is about 7,500,000 km from the star. The size and distances of the planets and the star are all to the same scale.
I need to work on the appearance of the planets. I want them to look realistic. Since my artistic skills are a bit primitive, that is a bit of a challenge. For testing I have just used maps of planets and moons in our system. I'll come up with something else before I'm done.
The probe is projected to have a speed op about 20% the speed of light. At that speed, it takes about 7 minutes to pass through the system. For my test I sped that up to about 140% the speed of light. That isn't realistic, but it gave me an idea what the final version would look like.
The test version was a disappointment. The path I laid out for the probe was too far from any of the planets. I will need to change the path, or move the planets.
I wanted to have the camera point at each of the planets at it flew by. I set some key frame locations and orientation of the camera, and let Blender interpolate the other frames. This didn't work very well. The camera would drift off the planet, then snap back. I am not an expert in Blender, so maybe there is an automated way to do that. If I don't figure that out, I may need to modify the location and orientation for each frame.
Seven minutes of silence can be boring, so I want to have some sound. I have some ideas, but I haven't followed up on them yet.
Trip to Mars
I am not actually planning to go to Mars, just do a video about the trip.
I am taking a course in conversational Mandarin. My wife is buried in China, and I'll need to speak a little bit of the language to travel there. I'm not doing very well with it so far.
I did have some success with a short story I wrote for the class. It is only 5 sentences long. My first idea was to talk about my wife, but I felt I might get too emotional. Instead I wrote about an imaginary trip I took to Mars.
I made a PowerPoint presentation to go with the story. I plan to turn that into a short video. Some of the images I used were copy written, so I'll have to find something in the public domain. I don't think I can afford to go to Mars and take my own pictures.

I will record the Mandarin myself, but will include some English subtitles for non Mandarin speakers, and Chinese subtitles for Mandarin speakers who can't make sense of my poor pronunciation.

Joi and Virtual John

I saw "Blade Runner: 2049" last week. The character Joi reminded me of a story idea I had many years ago that I called "Virtual John". It was a story about the virtual resurrection of John Lennon.

Joi

In "Blade Runner: 2049", Joi is a holographic artificial intelligence who acts as the protagonist's girlfriend. While she acts like she has emotions, and shows some evidence of thought, some people have suggested that the film later tries to call into question the reality of her personality.

I didn't see it that way when I watched the movie. I felt that, like the replicants in the first "Blade Runner", she is there to raise the question of what it means to be human. She is to the replicants what the replicants are to humans. They don't accept her as an equal.

Nevertheless, her character reminded me of a story idea I had years ago.

Origin

I don't remember exactly when I had the idea. I know it came to me as I woke up one morning while visiting my parents. I believe it was some time in the early 1980s. It would have been after John Lennon died and before I got my first home computer.

Basic Idea

The basic idea is that some one has a created a virtual/holographic reproduction of John Lennon. I think I must have come across the idea that the technology to do this would some day become available. In the story I would have whoever created it use film, video, and audio of Lennon to build up the simulation. The virtual John would be capable of behaving like the real John, not just as a musician but as a person.

Major Limitation

What I saw as the main limitation of Virtual John would be that he could only do and say things that the original John had done and said. The result would be that Virtual John would not have the ability to create anything new. For example: Virtual John could write songs, but only songs the original John had already written.

More recently I've read that researchers have been able to create computer systems that appear to develop new creative ideas, so maybe this might not be a real limitation. It does need to be a limitation for the purposes of the story.

Other People's Reactions

Most of the story would have dwelt on how other people reacted to Virtual John. In my imagination, the other Beatles, his friends, and his fans would be very enthusiastic at first. They would welcome Virtual John with open arms.

Over time, they would come to realize that a Virtual John would couldn't create anything new was not like the real John. They would drift away from him or reject him outright.

Virtual John's Reactions

Although Virtual John has no ability to create anything new, he does have feelings. I think the core of the story would be about how he would feel. I think this gives the story the opportunity to explore many different issues related to creativity and what it means to be human.

I think that he would be very hurt by the rejection of his friends and colleagues. No man is an island, and this would also be true of a virtual man.

I think that he would be angry that he is unable to create anything new. A John Lennon who could not create would feel constraints that he could not accept, but could not over come.

I never came up with an ending for the story. Maybe he gets someone to turn him off. Maybe in the depth of his despair he builds a new self and develops the ability to create.

Why Haven't I Done Anything With This Idea

I like this idea, but I have never made a serious attempt to develop it further. I doubt that I ever will.

The primary barrier is that it would require the approval of John's family and the other Beatles. I didn't think they would be interested. I rather doubt that I'd ever have the stature to get them to pay any attention to me or my ideas. In any event, as time passed, reality made the story less viable.

I gave some thought to adapting the idea to a fictional person. This would  be something I could actually do. However, a virtual reproduction of a fictional person would not have the same impact.

I felt that I just don't have the ability to fully realize the potential of the idea. A poor execution would be worse than not doing it at all.

The idea that you could resurrect a loved one with AI technology resonates with me because of the recent death of my wife. While I would like my wife back, I feel it is morbid to even consider AI resurrection, even if it were possible.

"My Most Difficult Case" Posted on YouTube

When I went to fix some minor problems on my website, I realized that the video for "My Most Difficult Case" was not working. I uploaded a new copy of the movie to YouTube.
I fixed some problems with my website this week. Years ago, when I moved my website from html and php files to WordPress, I created some php files to forward the old page addresses to the new WordPress addresses. I realised that several of the forwarding files didn't work.
While I was reediting these files, I noticed that the video on my page for "My Most Difficult Case" did not work. It just showed a black box. http://dynamiclethargyfilms.ca/filmlist/my-most-difficult-case/
When I uploaded it, I put it on a website called daily motion. At the time they had a feature that allowed you to charge people to watch, rather than rely on advertising. I thought that approach would make more money for my films. That didn't work out for me. I don't think anyone ever paid to watch it.
A few months back they gave me notice that they would drop the pay per view feature. Since it wasn't doing anything for me anyway, I just let them switch the video over to private. I didn't think until this week that meant the link on my web site page wouldn't work.
I also had an e-mail a while ago that asked me to consider publishing it on Amazon Video. That would have paid. I hadn't bothered to follow up on that yet, and wasn't sure if I would. Maybe I'll do that later, but for now, I decided to upload "My Most Difficult Case" to YouTube, and use that on my web page.

While I did that, I decided to modify the description of "The Barrier" as well. I didn't think it was clear that I still planned to make a new version of it. I didn't want people to think it was a final product.

“Sunset #6” and Relaxation Video

I made some progress on my “Sunset #6” video and worked on a little side project for my personal use.
Sunset #6”
I recorded the sounds outside one evening when it was quite windy out. I added that to the sound track of the sunset video I shot earlier. It turned out OK.
One of the problems with the sound was the extraneous background noises, like buses going by and some hot shot in a sports car speeding down Crowchild Trail. I had cut out some of the more obvious disruptive sounds, but didn't really notice the others. I may go back and cut them out, or I may try a new recording on another windy night.
I usually put my videos on a USB stick. I can plug that into my TV. With the sunset video after it plays for a while, maybe an hour, it hangs up. I have to unplug the TV to get it to work again. I use Premiere Pro CS4 for my editing. It is getting long in the tooth, so I wonder if it uses an outdated CODEC. I have been experimenting with ffmpeg lately, so I used it to reformat the mp4 file. The file was about half the size, and it worked just fine on the TV.
All the same, I wonder if I should upgrade my editor. I installed the free version of Lightworks, but found it difficult to understand. I'm not sure I would use Premiere Pro enough to justify the annual fee.
My new microphone comes on a stand with hand tightened screws on it. Some how I managed to screw one side so tight I couldn't move it. I had to get out my pliers to loosen it up.
Relaxation Video
I worked on another little project – mainly for myself. I had a video of water ripples I shot in Jasper back in 2009. I had recut it earlier to make it longer by cycling the video. Because I've been so tense and that was affecting my sleep, I wanted to add a relaxation exercise to it. I had a recording I got at a relaxation seminar about 30 years ago. I've used it off and on for many years. I added that to the video. I tried it out last night and I nearly went to sleep. I still was a bit tense when I went to bed, but I know that you need to practice it for quite a while before it real becomes effective.
I am not that happy with the video itself. Although I like the image and sound, the image quality is poor. It was in Standard Definition and I had to zoom in so I could move the image to eliminate my hand jitters. The resulting image is very fuzzy. I would like to reshoot it some time. My hand jitters have not improved, but I know better than to try to do these things hand held, and I do have a tripod. Three tripods actually.

Sunset Movie Update 2017 August 20

I made a few more steps forward on my Sunset video. I've run into a few issues I'll have to over come.

A short time ago I posted about my idea to do a video of a sunset. http://dynamiclethargyfilms.ca/sunset-2/

Since then I've tried to get a good video several times. I'm on “Sunset #6” now. I am not all that happy with the video I got so far. For the most part, the sunsets were not as impressive as I would have liked.

This week I noticed we had some much more visually interesting sunsets. The Sun has been a bit dimmer and red in colour when it nears the horizon these days. There has also been just the right amount of cloud cover to produce a pleasing image. Not too much and not too little. Sometimes the Sun gives an almost golden colour to the clouds.

Unfortunately, as we more inexorably toward fall,  the Sun sets further south every day. When I started, back in mid June, the view from my study window was just what I wanted. Now the Sun is blocked by big tree long before sunset. That makes for a rather dull sunset video.

I was out for a walk a couple days ago, and there are some other places where I could get a better view. However, when I can shoot from my study, I can set up the camera and go do something else. At another location, I would need to stay and babysit the camera until the sun was down. On the other hand, if I don't try a different location, I'll have to wait until next June before I get another shot at it.

I worked on the audio for the video too. The sound I got from the camera really wasn't useful.  I used a microphone I got recently to get some ambient sound. I matched it to the video I had. It is better; the microphone gives much cleaner sound.

Unfortunately, there wasn't very much interesting sound. Over the hour and a half I recorded, there was one bird that squawked a bit, one car drove down the lane, and a couple of planes flew over. I think I will need to construct an artificial “natural” sound. Many of the so called natural soundscapes you can get are done with a lot of creative intervention.

I think I'd need to collect sound for many days, and pick out the interesting stuff. I missed an opportunity to get some good wind sounds a couple nights ago.
