First Film Shot on My $100 Film Festival Film

After substantial procrastination, I’ve taken a break from my transportation planning stories to work on my short film for the 20th annual $100 Film Festival.

Wednesday I picked up a camera (a Canon Scoopic) from the CSIF’s new production coordinator Yvonne. It’s been a while since I used a 16mm camera, so I had to practice loading the film. I had a heck of a time with the practice film, but when I loaded the actual film, it worked just fine.

The film I have is a bit old, so I wanted to shoot a test roll to see if it is still OK. It is also quite fast: ISO 500.

Thursday I went over to the CSIF old location on 16th Avenue NW. I took several shots of the building. I ran into trouble right away. With the speed of the film I couldn’t set the exposure dark enough to get a picture. I talked to Yvonne about it later. The CSIF has a 2-stop neutral density filter for the camera. With that and the #85 filter I should be able to use it outdoors.

While I was at the old location some people were looking at me funny. One of them asked me what kind of camera I had. It turned out that he was a camera man for one of the local TV stations.

I shot some film indoors as well. That went better. I shot some images of some old $100 Film Festival posters and a film splicer. I got all the equipment returned by the end of the day.

I haven’t had any film processed since The Local Lab shut down, so I had to do a little research. I sent the film to Niagara Custom Lab in Toronto. Now I just have to hope for the best and wait for it to show up.
